"Yes and no, say some comparison videos that hit YouTube yesterday. In
the startup (above) and DVD loading, you see the Slim marginally trails
the Phat. But in starting and loading Batman: Arkham Asylum, it's
faster."

This is likely just seek time. The Slim has a different harddrive in it, so the seek time is probably a bit quicker for games. As far as the DVD's loading a bit slower, that might have more to do with the software that is being used to decode the DVD being slightly different. Since the hardware is different, they may be employing a different copy protection scheme of some sort.
Truly doesn't really matter. I'm amazed anybody bothered to even check this. I don't recall anyone doing this to an Xbox 360.

I guess the added level of scrutany is primarily because most ps3 owners have already subconsciously realized that the 360 has all the future of a now obsolete PC while the PS3 format and the yet untaped cell processor has at least another decade of life in its marketability. Perfection is the price we place on Sony for our commitment to the platform. After all the user and the manufacturer are in this platform war together and if the manufacturer even thinks of cutting corners we the consumer demand to know where and why so we know where where we stand at all times and can begin to abandon ship if needed.
