Game prices tumble

Video games recession proof? Hardly. Forbes thinks that we could be seeing an end to the $60 standard price on new games with publishers cutting prices only weeks after launch because demand is down. They also point out that if consumers realize the price will be cut shortly after launch they'll wait and won't buy the games which will be bad news for publishers and retailers alike.

Ubisoft has already cut the price of EndWar, Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia. Currently those three games are $40, $40 and $50 respectively on Amazon.com. Other big titles like Fable 2 have been cut too, with Fable 2 specifically sitting at $45 at most retailers.

We won't see the $60 price point go away anytime soon. Publishers like it and they'll want it to stick around. But if they have to keep cutting prices like this eventually they'll have to start releasing the games at lower price points, otherwise they'll have some serious problems revenue wise.
